Confined Space Training
Confined space training is legally required for anyone who works in or near confined spaces, which are enclosed areas not designed for continuous human occupancy. The specific training you need depends on the level of risk and your role which could range from awareness-level courses to advanced qualifications involving rescue procedures.
Low-risk confined Space
This training is for simple, unobstructed spaces with easy entry and exit and adequate natural ventilation, like valve chambers or meter pits. It covers safe entry and exit procedures, equipment use, and emergency responses. Gas monitoring may be required to ensure the atmospheric conditions prior to and during the work remain acceptable and the use of a tripod, winch and wearing of a harness may also be required for access and egress and in the event of an emergency.
Medium-risk confined Space
This two-day classroom and practical based course is designed to provide training with assessment so that delegates can understand and follow the requirements of the Approved Code of Practice (ACOP) L101 – Safe work in confined spaces (Confined Spaces Regulations 1997)
On completion of the course, delegates will have the requisite knowledge to enter or control entry into medium risk confined spaces where access into the space will require the use of gas monitoring the carrying of Escape Breathing Apparatus (EBA). It will involve the presence of one or more people who have designated responsibilities for controlling the entry into the confined space which may involve a vertical entry using a ladder and fall arrest/recovery winch or man-riding winch and harness or horizontal entry, such as walking or climbing into the confined space or working away from the bottom of a vertical entry, with limited use of rescue lines.
